Pray for the Fathers By Lorraine CurryDo you have sons? Without a doubt, if you have a husband, he is the greatest influence on their lives. Even if your mothering, teaching and helpmeet attitudes are stellar, unless your sons are endued with a lifelong godly example of manhood, they will be less than they can be.
What if Daddy is not quite the man you want your sons to be?
PRAY!
It is so important that from the birth of that male heir, or before, that you pray. Pray that God will shape your husband into what he needs to be. No, he will never be perfect, but he will be a better father than if you hadn't prayed.
SPECIFIC PRAYERS FOR YOUR HUSBAND
1) That he will be a mighty man of God. Do not hinder this in any way. If you do, you will later regret it - because your sons will not be all they could have been. Is God leading him to be a full-time preacher? Go for it! God is big enough to provide!
2) That he will be wholly Holy - dedicated to God. With today's research showing that so many professing Christians think sin is okay, this is crucial.
3) That he will take full responsibility for, and make a firm commitment to consistent spiritual training of his children, especially his sons.
4) Thy will be done. Never, I say never, hinder any of the above. If you think he is doing it wrong, pray! Keep your mouth shut.
5) It's never too late. Are your sons already grown, perhaps with families of their own? It is not too late for the God of the impossible to make them what they need to be. However, do not use this for an excuse to not pray one through four, above. This step is not the easiest, nor the best.
Along with praying, do your best to be a Biblical wife and use every school hour - especially when your sons are young - to teach all the truly manly characteristics that are so, so lacking today. Teach fidelity, chivalry, honor for women (if you are above reproach, this will come naturally), holiness, respect and so on.
Your text book is the Bible. Do not ever, from the youngest age onward until your children leave home, neglect it. The more I study classic literature, the more I see it falling so short of the perfect Word of God. Do not neglect a set course through the Scriptures. Plan for the entire childhood in Bible memory work, with a set number of verses memorized each year. (The King James version is much easier to memorize and recall.) These verses will come popping back in your children's minds restraining them when they are at an age where parents' words and preaching are often rejected.
And while you are at it, pray for all fathers! Our entire society will be a better one when fathers everywhere are what they should be.
